New appointments to Art Gallery of SA board
A cultural leader and a university vice chancellor are the latest to join the board of SA’s art gallery.
An Adelaide University Deputy Vice Chancellor and former First Nations engagement leader at Australia’s National Gallery are the latest to be appointed to the Art Gallery of South Australia board, Arts Minister Kyam Maher announced today.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic John Williams AM and Mandandanji and Mithaka woman Cara Kirkwood, who was a former engagement leader at the National Gallery, will serve three-year terms on the board.
Kirkwood is currently a member of AGSA’s First Nations Advisory Council, and also has previously worked with the Department of Parliamentary Services, Creative Australia and the Tarnanthi Festival.
“The Art Gallery of South Australia is one of our state’s iconic cultural institutions, and connects South Australians with world-class works of art,” Maher said.

“Both John Williams and Cara Kirkwood bring deep knowledge and expertise to the AGSA Board, and I know will contribute to the Gallery’s ongoing success.”
AGSA board chair Sandy Verschoor said the two “join us at an exciting time of transition, under the leadership of Director Jason Smith, as we shape the next 10 years of our groundbreaking Tarnanthi Festival and the first of our Winter Arts series is in full flight”.
It comes as AGSA has launched its latest exhibition, Monet to Matisse: Defying Tradition, bringing works from the Toledo Museum of Art to Adelaide in an Australian exclusive.
The exhibition is open until November 8 and received a $10 million investment from the state government.
