Westminster principal Simon Shepherd has announced he is leaving the helm of the school after more than eight years – at the end of the week.

Shepard’s announcement comes after a “period of long service leave during Term 1 and has been made after thoughtful consideration and consultation”, the school said in a statement.

“With both of his sons now having graduated from Westminster and living interstate, Simon will relocate to Melbourne to be closer to family,” the statement from the school where in 2025 the Year 12 fee was set at $28,728, said.

“He has accepted a principal’s role where he will continue his leadership in education beginning Term 1, 2027.”

Shepard began his role as principal at Westminster in 2017 and the school that boasts alumni including one of the state’s wealthiest men Darren Thomas, described his leadership as “transformational”.

Under Shepard’s leadership, enrolments grew and six major capital developments were delivered at the site, school council chair Craig Need said. This included a $40 million build including a new drama and music facility.

“Simon’s impact on Westminster will be felt for generations to come,” Need said.

“He has given generously of himself over many years, and his contribution has helped shape Westminster into the school it is today.”

The private school sits among the top ten most expensive in SA.

Among notable old scholars are musician Mark Holden, former Australian cricketer Cullen Bailey and Thomas Foods International chief executive Darren Thomas.

Shepard’s two sons also graduated from the school and are now based interstate.

“With my family now based interstate, I believe this is the right time to begin a new chapter,” Shepard said.

“I’m looking forward to taking the remainder of the year to travel, spend time getting to know Melbourne and return refreshed and ready for the next chapter.”

Deputy principal and head of senior school Andrew Whiteman, who has been acting principal during Shepard’s leave, will continue in the role until the end of the year.

Shepard will address a school assembly today (Wednesday, May 13) before officially concluding his tenure on Friday.
