Brisbane drivers are being slugged with the highest fuel prices in any capital city, according to the state’s peak motoring body, RACQ.

The association’s Annual Fuel Price Report showed Brisbane’s average for regular unleaded was 185.2 cents per litre (cpl) – compared with the cheapest city over the last three years, Adelaide, where drivers paid an average of 173.8 cpl.

But it’s not all bad news for Brisbane drivers, according to RACQ principal economic and affordability specialist Dr Ian Jeffreys.

“2025 saw a drop in Brisbane’s average unleaded price compared with 2024 – down 9.3cpl from 2024’s record highs,” he said in a statement.

According to the report, Kuraby was Brisbane’s cheapest suburb for fuel in 2025, at an average of 162.8cpl.

Clayfield, a 25-minute drive away from rom Kuraby, recorded Brisbane’s highest average of 200cpl.

“Motorists could save significantly by shopping around, with some suburb-to-suburb price differences reaching nearly 40cpl,” Jeffreys said.

He said there were a number of factors that contributed to Brisbane’s high fuel prices, including fewer independent service stations.

“Queensland’s capital (is) dominated by major companies,” he said.

“(Brisbane) has consistently been one of the most expensive and unpredictable cities for fuel in the country, and it’s clear the current market isn’t working in the best interests of motorists. That needs to change.”

Following the report’s release, RACQ has called for market regulation to stamp out unfair and unjustified price hikes.

Motorists are urged to compare prices, support fair‑priced retailers, and use RACQ’s tools and advice to make informed decisions every time they fill up.
