Chaz Mostert is refusing to panic after the Supercars championship contender suffered a major setback even before he can start the Adelaide Grand Final.

Walkinshaw Andretti United star Mostert was forced to limp back to pit lane after making heavy contact with a concrete wall during Friday’s final practice session.

The veteran first hit the inside wall at turn eight of the street circuit before the left rear of his Ford Mustang slammed into the opposing barrier, causing significant steering damage.

But Mostert kept his cool in the garage, knowing his fate could’ve been worse as he looks to finally break through for a maiden crown.

The 33-year-old had been at the top of the timesheets with a lap time of one minute and 19.460 seconds.

He is second in the standings behind Triple Eight rival Broc Feeney, with defending champion Will Brown and rookie Kai Allen in the final four.

“The car hooked up a little bit too good for me. I didn’t expect to be going on my first flyer,” Mostert told Fox Sports.

“I’ve been struggling a little bit with the balance at turn eight, but the tyre really livened it up a bit.

“I’d rather get my little scrape with the wall done nice and early with the weekend.

“I’m just glad I kinda saved it a little bit. It obviously hurt the car a bit, but it could’ve been a lot worse.

“The positive is that car actually feels pretty nice.”

Tickford ace Cam Waters, looking for redemption after being eliminated in Sandown last round, took out the practice session by setting a record time of 1:18.7884 ahead of Allen.

Grove youngster Allen trailed Waters by 0.0445 seconds in a massive statement to his championship rivals, while Feeney was third fastest.

Mostert was able to return to the track to test out repairs.

“They didn’t get a chance to look at the left front,” Mostert said.

“But got back out, and got through the demons at turn eight again and important to get back out there before quali.”

Mostert then quipped: “Let’s just create chaos.”

A two-part qualifying session gets underway at 1.10pm (AEDT), before the opening 32-lap, 100km race at 4.50pm.
