InDaily columnist Mike Smithson was named the state’s top columnist by a panel of peers at the 2025 SA Press Club Awards.

Veteran journalist and broadcaster Mike Smithson was named Best Columnist/Blogger in Print or Online Digital at the 2025 SA Press Club Awards on Friday.
At an awards dinner held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, the state’s top media talent gathered to celebrate the achievements of the press pack.
Smithson beat out a competitive field in his category, taking home the trophy for his weekly InDaily column on state politics.
Since commencing as a regular columnist for InDaily in early 2025, Smithson has covered topics ranging from political party intrigue, the algal bloom crisis and the forces affecting the upcoming state election.
Smithson also won the Best Broadcaster award for his work at 7 News.
“The quality of entries across all Award categories was extremely high,” SA Press Club President Rory McClaren said.
“Matters of great public interest, like domestic violence, the algal bloom and the fate of the Whyalla steelworks, featured prominently.”
The SA Press Club committee also acknowledged the career of veteran Samela Harris, who was given the SA Press Club Lifetime Achievement Award for her decades of service to South Australian journalism.
News Corp journalist Lauren Novak won the Gold Award for her reporting on domestic violence, while Nine’s Gus MacDonald won Young Journalist of the Year for his body of work over the past year.
“Submissions for this year’s Awards were received from every major media organisation, and with 230 entries it reinforces the SA Press Club Awards as the dominant annual media awards in the state,” McClaren said.
