A new Deputy President Judge has been announced on Monday morning to head the South Australian Employment Tribunal (SAET), with Jodie Carrel promoted into the role from her former position as Managing Commissioner.

The promotion was prompted by the announcement of the upcoming retirement of SAET Deputy President Judge Brian Gilchrist in March next year.

Judge Gilchrist is retiring after 31 years of judicial service, having sat in a range of jurisdictions, including the Industrial Relations Court of South Australia, the Australian Industrial Relations Commission, the Licensing Court of South Australia and the South Australian Employment Tribunal.

Serving with the South Australian Employment Tribunal since its establishment in 2017, Carrel was initially employed as Commissioner prior to taking on a management role.

“Carrel is well practised in employment law, having spent the past decade working as Commissioner and, subsequently, Managing Commissioner with the South Australian Employment Tribunal,” Deputy Premier and Minister for Industrial Relations and Public Sector Kyam Maher said.

“She has also worked in private practice in both the United Kingdom and South Australia, and heard matters as an Ordinary Member of the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.”

Additionally, Carrel’s extensive background and leadership within the tribunal includes three years’ experience as an Auxiliary Deputy President Magistrate.

Maher said the promotion reflected the high regard in which she was held across South Australia’s legal community.

Additionally, two sitting tribunal members have been authorised to hear matters before the Licensing Court.

SAET President Justice Steven Dolphin and Deputy President Judge Mark Calligeros had been given authority to attend Licensing Court proceedings.

Maher said this would ensure “demand for those matters can be met”.
