Donald Trump will be named Time magazine’s person of the year, according to two people familiar with the selection and plans.
Time will announce the winner of its annual title later on Thursday, and the incoming US president will ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange to honour the magazine’s cover, Politico reported.
Members of the Trump family, including daughter Ivanka, are expected to be at the bell-ringing.
Politico first reported the news of Trump’s selection and plans.
He will reportedly win for being recognised as the individual or group deemed to have wielded the greatest influence on global affairs “for good or for ill”.
Trump’s political comeback after two impeachments, four indictments, losing the 2020 election and inciting a riot at the US Capitol after that loss is a remarkable record.
This year, he also survived two assassination attempts, including one in which a bullet grazed his ear and killed a rallygoer.
Before turning to politics, the Republican US president-elect built his fortune as a New York real estate investor.
During his first term as US president, he measured his success in part by the strength of the stock market, which has so far welcomed his re-election.
Trump is the first US president to return to the White House after losing an election since Grover Cleveland in 1892. He will also be the US’s oldest president – and the first who is a convicted felon.
Trump was also named Time‘s person of the year in 2016, after his unexpected first presidential election win – and a year after he said he would never be awarded its coveted title.
“I told you Time magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favourite,” he wrote on Twitter in 2015, when the title went to then-German chancellor Angela Merkel
“They picked person who is ruining Germany.”
The soon-to-be president also landed in hot water when a BBC reporter found a fake Time cover of Trump framed and hanging in his Florida golf course in 2017.
Trump sat for a lengthy interview with Time last month.
Democratic President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris shared the magazine’s person of the year title in 2020, after they defeated Trump. Pop star Taylor Swift won it last year.
Time unveiled its person of the year shortlist earlier this week. It featured Trump, Harris, the Princess of Wales, Elon Musk and Benjamin Netanyahu.
A spokesperson for the magazine declined to comment on the selection.
