Airline expansion to boost SA tourism

Major international airlines are set to increase the number of direct flights to Adelaide, setting a record for international aviation in SA.

Singapore Airlines will operate 12 direct flights a week from October which will become the most weekly flights an international carrier has flown year-round to Adelaide.

China Southern Airlines has also announced flights from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport to Adelaide Airport will increase from three a week to daily from December to March.

The extra flights will deliver an increase of 1328 visitors from Singapore Airlines and 1064 from China Southern Airlines per week from December to March.

“This additional capacity demonstrates the growing appeal of our state as a visitor destination and the strong growth we’ve seen in the Asian market in the previous year,” Tourism Minister Emily Bourke said.

Detpak opens first US facility

Sustainable South Australian packaging manufacturer Detpak has officially opened its first US-based manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The new manufacturing facility will support Detpak’s global expansion by improving supply chain reliability, reduced lead times and greater operational flexibility for US-based customers.

Detpak is already one of the world’s largest packaging suppliers to both major food service and retail brands including McDonald’s, KFC, and Starbucks.

The multimillion-dollar facility, which spans more than 16,000 square metres, is currently undergoing equipment commissioning as full production is set to commence in August.

“As we continue to grow our global footprint, opening our own manufacturing facility in the United States is a key milestone for our business,” CEO Sascha Detmold Cox said.

SA partners with US space organisation

The state government has partnered with an international space organisation to boost SA’s role in the global space launch market.

The state and federal government have partnered to build a new integrated childcare centre in Davoren Park worth $16.3 million.

The Northern Area Community and Youth Services (NACYS) childcare centre will expand to provide additional health, wellbeing and early education services in one location to support children who need it most.

It will see the capacity increase to 100 early childhood education and care places when the new hub opens in early 2029.

The federal government will contribute $5.5 million, alongside $7.8 million from the SA government and $3 million from the Minderoo Foundation.

“Expanding this support in Adelaide’s north is another significant step in improving learning and development outcomes to set all kids up for the best start in life,” Education Minister Lucy Hood said.

Digital consultancy to lead council AI strategy

SA-based consultancy Bailey Abbott has been appointed as strategic AI and data partner for three of Adelaide’s largest metropolitan councils.

Bailey Abbott has won a multimillion-dollar four-year contract to partner with the City of Charles Sturt, City of Marion and Port Adelaide Enfield Councils to lead responsible AI adoption in SA local government.

The consultancy will be tasked with working alongside councils to build understanding of AI and improve services while maintaining safeguards around data, governance and transparency.

“Local government is unique as the closest level of government to our community and we’re proud to partner with councils to co‑design AI solutions that are transparent, practical and grounded in public value,” Bailey Abbott CEO Tom Carlton said.
