We speak to Burnside Village Centre General Manager Jodie Kannane about leadership, the centre’s expansion and how the shopping mecca stays relevant in 2026.

What does leadership mean to you?
Leadership is about empowering the team, encouraging collaboration, and leading by example – especially when tackling big challenges.
In an operational environment like retail property, leadership also means being present and practical. It’s about balancing strategy with day-to-day realities, making clear decisions, solving problems quickly, and ensuring the customer experience is consistently delivered at a high standard.
Operational leadership requires resilience, adaptability and a calm approach under pressure, because your team takes its cues from you.
I feel privileged to be able to share the vision and provide guidance and direction to help the team succeed.
The Burnside Village expansion has been massive. What were the biggest challenges?
Doubling the size of a retail centre and elevating it to Tier-1 luxury was a huge undertaking for the Cohen Group.
For the Burnside Village team, it meant keeping the customer experience seamless during construction, partnering with existing and new retailers, and keeping our community engaged every step of the way.
Are you happy with the final result?
Absolutely. Stage 6 has delivered a world-class environment, combining new luxury and lifestyle retailers with thoughtfully designed public spaces that honour Burnside Village’s heritage while looking confidently to the future. The striking architecture, abundant natural light and meticulous attention to detail have enhanced the overall experience, creating a centre that feels both sophisticated and welcoming.
What is especially rewarding is seeing how the community has embraced the expansion. We are attracting new customer groups and seeing the many ways people use the space — from groups enjoying the elevated seating pods, to families taking advantage of the spacious, well-equipped parents’ rooms and the wide, open mall areas.
Burnside Village has become more than a shopping destination; it is a place where the community can meet, connect, and spend meaningful time together.
Importantly, we’ve maintained a safe, comfortable and highly convenient environment. With almost 1,600 free undercover car parks, accessibility remains a key strength. It’s a centre the community feels proud of and one they genuinely want to return to again and again
It seems like Burnside Village is constantly evolving. What’s next?
We’ll continue refining experiences, adding luxury stores and dining, and creating spaces that inspire – keeping Burnside Village Adelaide’s must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.
What’s the core of Burnside Village today?
At its core, Burnside Village is about creating memorable, luxurious experiences. We connect people with the brands they love, offer thoughtfully curated retail, and provide spaces for the community to gather, explore and enjoy.
Equally important is our partnership with retailers: understanding their business, supporting their success, and ensuring we provide the best possible environment for them to excel.
How does Burnside Village stand out in a digital era?
We focus on what online can’t offer: stunning design, a wide collection of exceptional art by South Australian artists, generous parents’ room amenities, personalised service, immersive events, free undercover parking and a true sense of community.
Our physical spaces engage all the senses, making every visit memorable.
And how do you stay competitive?
By understanding our customers, partnering closely with retailers, curating a mix of first-to-market and iconic stores, and continually investing to keep the centre fresh, inspiring, and relevant.
With International Women’s Day coming up, what does it mean to you?
It’s a chance to celebrate the achievements of women, and to acknowledge their contributions. It reminds me of the importance of inclusive workplaces and fostering opportunities for growth so that every woman has the confidence and support to reach her potential.
It’s also an opportunity to support and mentor the next generation of female leaders, while recognising that we can continue learning from them along the way.
