In this week’s Briefcase, Flinders researchers land a commercialisation grant and JAX Tyres and Auto expands in SA.

Gold and copper recovery technology recently developed at Flinders University has received a $500,000 Australia Economic Accelerator (AEA) Ignite grant, pushing it towards commercialisation.
The novel technology is safer and more sustainable than previous methods, according to Flinders University Professor Justin Chalker.
“Our invention features a low-cost and recyclable method for extracting gold, and a novel and selective polymer sorbent to remove the gold from complex mixtures,” said Chalker.
ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award Fellow Dr Thomas Nicholls is part of the team driving the project, in collaboration with Chalker.
“The ability to recover pure gold and copper makes recycling electronic waste more attractive, and more financially viable to our industry partners,” Nicholls said.
“This AEA Ignite grant will allow us to scale up to much greater volumes”.
Tjindu Foundation, which supports cultural education and success in schooling for Aboriginal children, is partnering with SCSA’s sporting and cultural programs.
SCSA principal Matthew Daly said the partnership will broaden SACE pathways for students and reflects a shared vision of creating opportunities where young people felt supported to thrive.
“We’re honoured to work alongside the Tjindu Foundation to support learning pathways that recognise the value of culture, connection, and sport,” Daly said.
Tjindu foundation CEO Kellie Graves said the partnership brought together two organisations united by a shared vision for empowering young people through alternative education pathways.
“Tjindu Foundation are thrilled to walk alongside Sports College as our education partner moving forward in 2026 and beyond,” Graves said.

JAX Tyres and Auto has opened its latest store in Munno Para, the organisation’s 97th location nationwide, and the third location in South Australia.
Franchisee, Campbell Aldis, has spent 21 years working in the South Australian automotive and insurance industry.
“We are thrilled to officially join the JAX Tyres and Auto family. The support we have received has been outstanding, and it is evident that the organisation is deeply committed to its core values,” he said.
