Adelaide Central Gallery presents The Last Tide Waiter, a solo exhibition by 2025 SALA Feature Artist Sue Kneebone.

The exhibition features a layered accumulation of moving image, sound and found artefacts, including animal bones, musical instruments and antique furniture, all transformed under Sue’s meticulous research into peculiar and dark ancestral histories. The Last Tide Waiter centres on Sue’s research into her great-great grandfather, who worked as a tide waiter in 1870’s Port Louis, Mauritius.

“I’ve got a vision of this space being a bit of a customs warehouse that’s gone awry;” Sue says in a recent Art Guide interview.

The Last Tide Waiter is a rich exhibition of clashing family and oceanic histories, and a wonderful example of Sue Kneebone’s multifaceted practice. The exhibition coincides with the launch of Wakefield Press’ monograph on Sue’s practice, with a Writers Panel discussion happening at Adelaide Central School of Art on Saturday 16 August, 12:30pm.
