Where the vines meet the sea
This renovated country cottage boasts expansive views of surrounding vineyards and the ocean on 7780 square metres.
On the outskirts of Willunga’s small township, and far enough from the hustle and bustle of the city, this picturesque country cottage sits where the country meets the coast.
The wrap-around verandah and multi-pane window doors afford this renovated 1930s home a classic colonial cottage style that looks like something out of a fairytale.
This is what Megan and Andy Carlin were looking for when they purchased the home approximately 18 months ago – peace, quiet and space for their three sons to roam.
“We wanted a couple of acres for the boys and I could just picture the them wandering around the garden,” Megan says.
“We love the space we have out here and the peace of being further from the city.”
Megan and Andy were previously living in Somerton and then Glenelg, and Megan, who has never been too far from the coast, says Willunga is the best of both worlds.
“We’re surrounded by wineries and there’s so much you can do outdoors.”

“But the beach is still very close – that was a big factor for me because I don’t like being far from the beach.
“I feel like Willunga is perfect for that, you’re near the ocean but you’re also in the country.”
The couple has previously built and renovated their own homes, so by the time their Willunga cottage came along, they knew exactly what they wanted and how to get it done quickly.
Through their own projects, Megan found a love for interior design and has taken some courses on the side of helping Andy with their company, AC Electrical Adelaide.
The couple fully renovated the bathrooms and the laundry, and updated the kitchen, bedrooms, fixtures, hardware and lighting throughout the home.
Megan says she wanted to keep it neutral and it was also important to keep everything cohesive.
The soft palette of the kitchen is carried through the bathrooms while timber floors create warmth and are complemented by the timber accents in the cabinetry – a nod to the country, cottage feel of the home.
“I enjoy being creative and I’m very particular about how things look,” Megan says.
“My husband calls me fussy, but I just like selecting the colours and making everything look cohesive and work together.”
“When we moved in I changed all of the door hardware and the tap hardware because I can’t handle when everything is different metals in a property, I like it all to match.”

Megan says her favourite thing about this home is the views and the outdoors.
“Every window you look out of, there is either the beautiful garden, or the view across the vineyards, or a view to the ocean,” she says.
“The house has a wrap-around verandah, so on one side you get more of a view of the vineyards.
“Last night we had a little picnic under the tree on the other side of the home where you get the sunset views.”
Megan and Andy have added a sand pit and a cubby house to the garden for the boys, as well as a large, flat lawn where they love to play soccer.
A creek also runs past the almost 7800 square metre property, which Megan thinks the boys will miss the most.
“We will miss all of those things that you can’t take with you,” she says.
“I think you can always change your house, but you can’t change the land or where it is.”
Although their Willunga home has space outside, Megan and Andy are now looking for a bit more space inside for their growing boys.
“It was just such a beautiful house postpartum – just sitting with the baby, being able to look out and just watch the birds or the garden or the sunrise or the sunset,” she says.
“It’s a beautiful little house.”
