Arts administrator wins City Council election
Arts administrator Sandy Verschoor has been elected to fill the Adelaide City Council vacancy created by Greens senator Robert Simms’ move to the federal parliament.
Ballot counting resumed this morning after no winner could be declared overnight. Shortly after midday, Verschoor won through from a field of 13 candidates, which included former councillor and deputy Lord Mayor Mark Hamilton, who stood unsuccessfully for mayor last year.
Verschoor joins a council that has presided over a suite of contentious debates, including bike lanes and food trucks.

She tweeted recently that Adelaide “is the perfect cycling and walking city”, calling for “more safe pathways, integrated transport – not add-ons”.
She is currently the Windmill Theatre’s General Manager and Producer, and has overseen the SA Writers’ Centre, the Adelaide Festival of Ideas and the Adelaide Fringe. She has also worked at the Council as general manager of city culture and community services.
In the final count, she won with 1348 votes, ahead of small business owner Lauren Nguyen with 1167 votes.
