‘Grandpa crocodile’: How Bindi honours dad, twenty years on
Bindi Irwin has shared a touching tribute to her father Steve, the famous “Crocodile Hunter” – and shared the heartwarming way she keeps his memory alive for her own daughter.
Bindi Irwin has shared a touching tribute to her dad, Steve, on the anniversary of his death.
Bindi was just eight years old at the time, and in a moving tribute posted to social media revealed her grief has “never truly left us”.
“Twenty years ago, today, the world lost the most passionate and dedicated wildlife conservationist,” the now 28-year-old wrote alongside a video of her dad.
“Our family lost our superhero. My mum lost the love of her life; my brother and I lost the greatest dad.
“Grief never truly leaves us; we walk alongside it every day. Where there is enormous grief, there is even greater love.”
She went on to reveal what it was like to lose not just a dad, but one of the country’s most beloved personalities.
“In the last 20 years, I have watched the world mourn my dad with our family. I always thought that my dad’s legacy is wildlife conservation; it turns out, his legacy is love.”

She also said her daughter, Grace Warrior, “watches his documentaries every morning”.
“She feels utterly loved by her “grandpa crocodile” without ever having met him,” she said.
Bindi’s mother, Terri Irwin, quickly responded to the tribute, writing “your dad loves you so very much,” on the post.
The Australia Zoo official page posted: “The greatest Wildlife Warrior will always live on through his legacy and your family”.
