Flood warning as Onkaparinga River waters swell
Heavy overnight rain has triggered an emergency services flood warning with southern suburbs locals warned to “prepare their properties”. See the drone footage.
State Emergency Services have issued a flood warning for those living in the Old Noarlunga area of Adelaide, with concerns over minor flooding from the Onkaparinga River.
An SES spokesperson said levels of the Onkaparinga River will reach the ‘minor flooding’ level shortly and then will hold for most of the day.
But more rainfall was expected overnight after at least 50mm fell in the area and residents and businesses were being warned to “prepare their properties”.
“South Australia has had the wettest winter in a decade,” the spokesperson said.
“While there were no severe weather warnings or thunderstorm warnings overnight, the existing water levels in our catchments and rivers, and the wet conditions of the soil, has caused this minor flooding.”

The SES has attended 130 requests for assistance since 1 am on Monday, August 24, to 9 am this morning, with 38 of these since midnight last night.
Of those, 48 were flooding salvage-related jobs, 39 were severe weather-related jobs and 28 involved trees being down.
“We are asking people to prepare their properties and stay informed by checking SES social media channels and our website for updates and monitoring for any warnings by the Bureau of Meteorology,” the spokesperson said.
“Roads in the area may also close quickly, to monitor this please visit the Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s Traffic SA website. “

Sandbags are being handed out at two locations:

- On the corner of Lindsay Road and Brian Road in Lonsdale
- At Noarlunga Football Club
Drivers are being warned to turn around and find an alternative route if they encounter flooding.
“Do not let children play in flood waters. Please remain vigilant by driving to conditions if you are on the road,” the spokesperson said.
“We’ve seen some impacts from overnight rain in Aldinga, Sellicks and the Eastern suburbs. However, at the moment our warning remains for the Old Noarlunga area.”
The SES currently has an Incident Management Team in place at the Noarlunga Unit to ensure an effective, and coordinated response.
“This team is also using drones to ensure we are across the conditions in the area,” the SES spokesperson said.
“Additional volunteer capacity is being brought in to support the Noarlunga SES from nearby Units. There has also been an incredibly quick response and collaboration from our partner agencies, and we appreciate their work with us here.”
