Carrick Hill estate will light up with projections from acclaimed textile artist William Morris for two weeks from July 9 to July 26.

William Morris Winter Wonderland at Carrick Hill will be an immersive night experience that will see the historic 100-acre estate building illuminated by famous designs from the 19th century English textile designer and the extensive Springfield gardens lit up.

Morris rose to prominence for his contributions to the revival of British textile arts and methods of production in the 1800s. He was also known for his writing, poetry and social activism as an outspoken socialist.

His wallpaper, textile, and furniture patterns were often inspired by nature with many art pieces depicting flowers, trees and birds.

Some of Morris’ best-known designs will be projected at Carrick Hill across the two-and-a-half weeks, including Strawberry Thief, Willow Boughs, and Trellis.

The immersive experience will see large-scale animated projections of Morris’ work across the façade of the Carrick Hill home accompanied with music and visual storytelling.

Projections of blossoming flowers, intricate vines and woodland creatures are anticipated to move across the 90-year-old building.

Visitors will be able to walk through the illuminated gardens, with the event expected to attract both local and interstate visitors.

Mulled wine, hot cinnamon donuts, seasonal soups with sourdough, and toasties are being sold from nearby architecturally designed restaurant Rozelle’s opened in 2024.

Carrick Hill has a long history with Morris’ work, it has several of his pieces including a three-panel embroidered screen designed for the Barr Smith family.

Morris’ wallpapers and extensive furnishings were used to decorate the homes of the Barr Smith’s extended family, including Ursula Hayward who previously owned Carrick Hill alongside husband Sir Edward Hayward.

Carrick Hill director Heather Croall said Winter Wonderland will offer visitors a brand-new way to experience the “extraordinary” estate.

“Carrick Hill holds a genuine and significant connection to William Morris through Ursula Hayward’s family, the Barr Smiths, who were major clients of Morris and whose legacy is reflected in the collection of William Morris works held at Carrick Hill,” she said.

“Seeing the house and gardens transformed through light, projection and storytelling will be truly unforgettable; William Morris designs and Carrick Hill lit up like you’ve never seen.”
