A “clear need for housing” in a growing South Australian region is seeing one local council unlock land that could accommodate hundreds of new homes.

Renmark Paringa Council is pushing head with the design and construction of key infrastructure to transform a key plot of land to host more than 500 homes.
The council endorsed the Renmark West Community Wastewater Management System expansion last month, which will prepare an area on the fringe of Renmark with the infrastructure required for housing development.
Renmark Paringa Mayor Peter Hunter told InDaily the $3 million plan was 10 years in the making, and that costs would be recovered over time through developer contributions.
He said the area was identified as a “key growth zone” and has capacity for more than 500 new allotment as demand grows for cheaper housing outside the metropolitan region.

The area was tailored to large 2000m2 blocks and rural neighbourhood living, the Mayor said.
Renmark is growing and the township needs to build more homes to keep up with demand, according to Hunter.

“It’s an incredible lifestyle and we think that people want to be close to town but not in it,” he said.
“Land and the cost to build out here is perhaps half of metropolitan Adelaide.
“We want to make sure we’ve got an option for everybody.”
Ray White Riverland sales executive Pat Catalano said land in Renmark was in high demand.
“At the moment, rural residential land is becoming in higher demand, and we’re seeing a good level of interest coming in, so we could do with some land,” he said.
“I’ve got close relationships with the local builders here and catch up with them on a weekly basis and they are really looking for some land to build on.
“They’ve got a list of clients that are keen to build.”

Property prices were enjoying “good growth” in Renmark, Catalano said, noting there’s been about a 10 per cent increase in house prices over the past year.
Indeed, house prices in regional SA grew by 11.7 per cent over the course of 2025 to a median value of $489,000 according to PropTrack data.
People were looking to move to Renmark because it’s more affordable than towns closer to Adelaide.
But “Renmark is a beautiful town,” Catalano said.
“The lifestyle is what attracts them,” he said.
