Adelaide Festival’s opening night, headlined with a free concert by Britpop band Pulp, will go ahead despite a tropical downpour forecast for the metro area.

Festival organisers took to their website to assure fans “the event plays rain or shine”, but warned “in the case of severe weather” alternate arrangements would be listed online.

“Please refer to adelaidefestival.com.au at 3pm,” the advice currently states

The warning comes as the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts a tropical low system could dump as much as 70mm of rain on the metro area by Sunday.

BOM senior weather forecaster Angus Hines told InDaily rain was expected to fall on the majority of the state over the weekend.

“It’s rare we get a tropical system moving so far south,” he said.

“And we will see quite a significant amount of rainfall over the next couple of days.”

Hines said the bureau predicted anywhere between 15mm to 70mm of rain would fall on the metro area from Friday night and into the weekend.

“But really Sunday is the key day,” he said.

The average March rainfall in Adelaide is 23.4mm, he said.

“There’s every chance we will get more than that over the weekend. We could even double or triple that.”

According to bureau figures, the average annual rainfall in Adelaide is 524mm.

Meanwhile the State Emergency Service has warned residents to prepare now ahead of this weekend’s forecast drenching.

That is in addition to the Flood Advice Message it issued for large swathes of the South Australian Outback on Thursday.

Flooding is currently occurring across parts of North East South Australia, which may threaten you and your family’s safety,” the message said.

“Heavy rainfall with significant accumulated totals will continue across the warning area.

“River and creek levels continue to rise, and localised flooding has been observed and may continue with additional rainfall.”

It is expected the warning will stay in place until Monday.
