Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wed fiancé Jodie Haydon in a secret, private ceremony at The Lodge on Saturday.

Details of the wedding have been kept tightly under wraps.

Albanese is the first Australian Prime Minister to wed while in office.

Albanese proposed to Haydon on Valentine’s Day last year, announcing the news via social media in a post caption “She said yes”.

It was accompanied by a smiling snap of him and Haydon, with her showing off a sparkling engagement ring.

Albanese and Haydon met at a business event in Melbourne in early 2020, when he was still opposition leader. They bonded over their shared passion for the South Sydney Rabbitohs NRL team, before finding they “got on pretty well” after catching up for a beer.

Haydon lives in Albanese’s inner-Sydney electorate of Grayndler. One of the couple’s first dates was a Young Henrys brewery in the suburb of Newtown.

“We had what I thought would just be a drink at Young Henrys in Newtown, and we got on really well. That’s how it started,” Albanese told Australian Women’s Weekly in 2022.

Albanese, 60, was married to former NSW deputy premier Carmel Tebbutt for 19 years. They split in January 2019, and have an adult son, Nathan.

Albanese has previously spoken of being “emotionally bruised” by the sudden break-up of his marriage.

It is the first marriage for 45-year-old Haydon.

She has previously spoken about how Albanese’s life-threatening car accident near his inner-Sydney home in 2021 made her realise her true feelings for him.

“It was very scary, and in that moment, you realise just how much you love this person, the fear of losing them,” she said ahead of the 2022 federal election.

“I know the months ahead [of the election] will be intense. But my focus will simply be to support each other through it.”

Haydon and Albanese maintained a low profile at the start of the relationship, before it was thrust into the spotlight in 2020 when a photograph of them kissing was published.

Haydon was born to school teacher parents in the Sydney suburb if Bankstown, but grew up on the NSW Central Coast.

Her career in the superannuation industry has seen her live in both Melbourne and Sydney.
