The weather bureau has issued warnings as an upper-level low brings rains for NSW and Queensland all week.

Substantial rainfall is forecast from central NSW up to southern Queensland, with the heaviest falls likely in north-east NSW and south-east Queensland.

“Showers have just started moving onto parts of the NSW coast and this will kick off a prolonged run of wet weather over the next several days, affecting parts of eastern Australia which have already seen significant rain and flooding,” the Bureau of Meteorologist’s Angus Hines said.

On Tuesday, BOM senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said showers would affect much of the Queensland and NSW coastline.

“Isolated, scattered showers are expected across much of south-east Queensland, southern inland Queensland as well across parts of the Darling Downs,” Bradbury said.

“For NSW, it’s mainly focused along the east coast and northern areas, but there will be showers around Sydney and the Illawarra region as well.

“These showers are expected to kind of fill out to more widespread, persistent rainfall by late Wednesday.”

Roads in eastern NSW and southern Queensland may also become dangerous for driving at times this week, while disruptions to sport fixtures and other outdoor events are also a certainty,” Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino wrote.

It is also wet on the other side of the country, with the BOM issuing a severe weather warning for southern Western Australia. A cold front crossing the WA coast on Tuesday is expected to bring severe thunderstorms, showers and locally heavy rainfall.

Stay informed, daily

Up to 80 millimetres is possible in WA’s south-west, and up to 40 millimetres in the state’s central and lower-west regions, including Perth, by Wednesday.

Weatherzone said the forecast was likely to mean another month of above average rain for Perth, which has already had 110.8 millimetres of rain during August.

“This system will also bring colder days later in the week, mainly on Wednesday,” Weatherzone said.

“A cold airmass associated with a high pressure system will ease the showers from Thursday and bring chilly mornings late next week.”
