A northern suburbs mother has turned a childhood passion into a new business with help from a government programme supporting parents.

During her pregnancy, Tiffany was preparing her young child for the expected loss of a close family member.
In December 2024, Tiffany [who wanted to keep her surname anonymous] connected with Parent Pathways to access more support on building confidence, a free, volunteer-centred Australian Government service that provides personalised mentoring for parents with young children.
Among support provided was access to practical grief and bereavement resources from Cancer Council, Raising Children Network and Kids Helpline to help navigate difficult conversations.
For Tiffany, building a future for herself and her family based in Munno Parra involved a simple goal: to feel healthier, more confident, and ready to welcome her second child.
When Tiffany started with Parent Pathways, she felt “lost” and “unsure” about where she was going with life and a Parent Pathways mentor helped Tiffany set small, achievable goals and provided practical assistance tailored to her circumstances.
This included helping Tiffany access support for her health and physical wellbeing. She also received fuel assistance so she could attend appointments, and offering flexible phone appointments when pregnancy-related illness made travelling difficult.
After giving birth to her second child, Tiffany re-engaged with Parent Pathways and began thinking more seriously about her next steps, which would shape her future.
Her long-standing love for nails and nail art soon became the foundation for a new goal: building a flexible career she could pursue while raising her two young children.
Tiffany said, “I’ve always really loved nails and nail art since I found some press-ons as a kid.”
With Parent Pathways’ support, Tiffany enrolled in a Nail Technician course and received help accessing professional nail kits and equipment. She also received additional nail training and the skills needed to establish a home-based business, Chaos Nails by Tiffany.
“Doing that helped me realise I can do something for myself while raising my kids. I feel like I am more than just mum.”
For Tiffany, receiving this opportunity has been about much more than learning a new skill. This program has helped her see herself and what she believes is possible.
Tiffany believes the biggest factors for gaining confidence are the small things. “It’s nothing ginormous that gains my confidence; it’s just the little comments.”
“She (the mentor) would support me and send me a message of just encouragement and say ‘you got this and don’t stress’.”
