The state government has endorsed a win for South Australia’s cab drivers, following years of lobbying from the state’s peak body for taxi drivers.

Compulsory Third Party insurance premiums for taxis and rideshare vehicles will be brought in line later this year, with the state government delivering for cabbies who have long been calling for the change to be made.
InDaily can reveal cabinet has endorsed the independent CTP regulator’s decision to reduce premiums for metropolitan taxi operators while increasing premiums for metropolitan rideshare vehicles, like Ubers.
Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis – once a taxi driver himself – said the changes “recognise that metropolitan taxis and rideshare vehicles operate in a comparable way”.
New and aligned premium ranges for these vehicle classes will apply to registration renewals due on or after September 1.
The annual metro taxi premium will reduce from the July 1 2026 premium to $1339.09 (down 51 per cent), while an annual rideshare vehicle premium will increase to $1298 (up 17 per cent).
There would be no impact on non-metro taxis and rideshare operators as the premium range for these vehicle classes were already aligned.
“The new designation will see big savings for many drivers with smaller increases for others, but significantly aligns point-to-point passenger transport operators providing equivalent services,” Koutsantonis said.
Taxi Council SA executive officer Cheryle Conduit said the peak body had been lobbying for the change since the introduction of rideshare in South Australia last decade.
“The Taxi Council welcomes the Treasurer’s recognition of the longstanding need for a fairer approach to CTP premiums for taxis and rideshare vehicles,” Conduit said.
“For years, taxi operators have paid premiums around 10 times higher than private motorists, and more than three times higher than rideshare vehicles since their introduction.
“This is an important step toward a more balanced and sustainable outcome for South Australia’s taxi industry.”
