Lions Assistance Dogs turns first sod for new centre

A $16 million centre to train assistance dogs has begun construction in the Adelaide Hills, with construction expected for early 2028 completion.

The new Lions Assistance Dogs centre will allow the training and placement of up to 120 assistance dogs each year.

It will increase the current facilities’ 21-dog capacity to 60 kennels, and include nine exercise yards, three dedicated training houses, a multifunction training hall and on-site veterinary facilities.

Governor of South Australia Frances Adamson AC turned the first sod, with supporters and Lions Club members from around Australia present.

The new centre follows a growing need for assistance dogs as 135,000 Australians live with type 1 diabetes, while an estimated one in four Australians are expected to experience hearing loss by 2025, and an estimated 30,000 veterans are living with PTSD.

“Today we start closing that gap. What makes it even more remarkable is that Lions Assistance Dogs is funded entirely through donations, philanthropy, and the extraordinary generosity of Lions Clubs across the country,” Lions Assistance Dogs CEO David Horne said.

Commercial builder expands ownership group

SA commercial construction firm Partek Constructions has announced a major expansion of its shareholding group with two senior team members joining the ownership structure.

Partek currently employs 55 people across the state and has delivered major projects across health, education and defence sectors including major clients such as William Buck and Westminster School.

“Welcoming Max and Lawrence into the shareholding group strengthens our ability to keep delivering projects ‘the Partek way’, with hands-on ownership, active leadership, and genuine collaboration,” Partek projects director and shareholder Garth Hall said.
