Two of the country’s most respected economic minds will come together in Adelaide next month to host a timely conversation about South Australia’s current economic landscape.
The Uncharted Economy Business Luncheon, presented by the South Australia Business Chamber and Credit Union SA, will be held on Wednesday, 24 September, at 12pm at SkyCity Adelaide.
The event will offer practical insights into the complex and rapidly evolving economic environment, charting a path to future growth.
Keynote speakers include Susan Stone, the Credit Union SA Chair of Economics at UniSA, and Evan Lucas, economic futurist and one of Australia’s most trusted voices on financial markets and economic behaviour.
Stone will provide expert analysis and new thinking about South Australia’s economic position and how global economic factors impact the local economy.
She points to three economic trends that are currently holding back South Australian businesses.
“There is a lack of training and investment, which is leading to a slow or no-growth South Australian economy,” she says.
“The large number of micro businesses can’t generate the employment growth the state needs, while distortions in the housing market are leading to a ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ society.”
Stone says the luncheon will offer an “informed and frank discussion of the challenges facing the South Australian economy (that are also facing the Australian, and indeed the global, economy) and the necessary, if potentially uncomfortable, steps needed to address them.”
Lucas will blend economic insight and demographic knowledge with behavioural science to explain what financial decisions are needed today for the economic future of tomorrow.
“The slow/resistant adoption of future technology is holding South Australian businesses back,” he says.
“The sector is also suffering from housing inefficiencies and overregulation, along with reverse brain drain and the problems of attracting capital.”
He expects the luncheon to offer “a full and frank exchange on the opportunities SA and Australia has and whether or not we are ready to take them”.
Following the presentations, the duo will come together for a dynamic panel discussion and audience Q&A session.
