Adelaide butcher Windsor Meats has become the first retailer in the world to stock low-methane, “guilt-free” beef through a partnership with South Australian company CH4 Global.
The Malvern butcher has groundbreaking low emission wagyu beef available for purchase starting today, with Angus beef products at a more affordable price set to be on shelves by October.
Sam Burt, the owner of Windsor Meats, said Windsor Meats was “incredibly proud to be the first shop in the world to be able to offer our customers a much more sustainable meat product.”
This partnership is the first of many CH4 Global is planning with South Australian businesses. It has also met with Chianti, Barossa Fine Foods, Sky City Adelaide – which contains seven dining establishments at its North Terrace location – and prominent supermarket chains.
The company has established significant international partnerships, but is prioritising full integration into South Australia’s economy and community.
Dr Steve Meller, the CEO and co-founder of CH4 Global, explained that the company was “building the entire end-to-end ecosystem in South Australia”, from grow tanks on the Eyre Peninsula, to the company’s Methane Tamer feed supplement feeding cows in farms across the state, and finally to South Australian tables.
Meller also highlighted plans at a press conference today to expand into the national market by 2026.
The production process begins at CH4 Global’s EcoPark at Louth Bay, opened in January, which currently features 10 large-scale Asparagopsis cultivation ponds, with work underway to see that expanded to 100 ponds in the next three years – enough to serve 45,000 cows daily.
Asparagopsis is a red seaweed scientifically proven to reduce methane emissions from cows by up to 90 per cent when used as a feed additive.
CH4 Global is one of more than 10,000 members of Brand SA, which was reestablished by the State Government to support local industries. Minister for Trade and Investment Joe Szakacs said the government was proud of their support for CH4 Global.
Of the product, he said: “whether you call it ‘better beef’, ‘low methane beef’ or ‘guilt-free beef’, at its core, it’s proudly the result of South Australian ingenuity and innovation, and more importantly, it’s delicious.”
