Ever wondered what goes on behind the thousands of triangular windows that abound on the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute? Well, this August everyone is invited to step inside and see where the magic happens at SAHMRI’s annual Open Day.

Nestled on North Terrace, the iconic Cheesegrater building is at the heart of innovation in one of the largest health and medical precincts in the southern hemisphere health.

SAHMRI has been at the forefront of many life-changing discoveries over the past decade and its breakthroughs are not confined to the lab; they are translated into life-saving medications, evidence-based healthcare policies and refined clinical practices.

SAHMRI brings together more than 700 researchers to collaborate across four primary areas of study: delving into diverse responses to cancer care and treatment; bridging health disparities faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities; boosting health and reducing harm for mums and their babies; and tackling a whole host of chronic health conditions that plague our everyday lives.

At SAHMRI’s Open Day, you can check out the Cheesegrater from top to bottom on a 30-minute guided tour.

Visitors can also engage with a variety of presentations about from our researchers about their work, with the opportunity to ask questions afterwards, plus explore a host of fun, interactive displays throughout the building.

Visitors to previous SAHMRI Open Days have been blown away by what they have experienced.

“The grip strength test, the memory test, learning how many sugar cubes are in some processed food, every stall was interesting, and the staff very informative.”

“I now know how much exciting research work is being done in SAHMRI. The open day was the happiest day I have experienced in a long while, after retiring over 20 years ago!”
