A 75-year-old Queensland truck driver will face Adelaide Magistrates Court today charged over a collision which killed two freight train drivers on the Barrier Highway.

Two Port Augusta men – locomotive drivers aged 48 and 57 – died after their train was hit by a truck near Bindarrah close to the New South Wales border on Sunday morning.
The impact caused the locomotive to catch fire and derailed carriages, blocking the highway which was closed for days.
Major Crash officers arrested the truck driver and charged him with causing death by dangerous driving. He did not apply for bail and will appear via videolink in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today.
Police said on Tuesday morning the highway had reopened, but speed was limited to 25km/h near the crash site. The restrictions are expected to be in place for three days.
Cranes were brought in from Adelaide and Port Augusta to help pick up containers from the train. The road surface was also damaged.
The train drivers’ deaths were the 115th and 116th lives lost on SA roads in 2023, compared with 71 at the same time in 2022.
