Commenting on the story: SA Labor MPs call for Jobseeker increase

While I understand that the JobSeeker allowance is not a lot of money, I don’t know that making life easier for those not working is a good Idea.

We are looking for 3-5 full time employees that we are struggling to get because of a lack of applicants. The 4% unemployed number is misleading in that the reported 4% is made up of a range people of differing ages and differing backgrounds, some of which are not willing or unable to take on full-time work.

Some accurate explanation of the makeup of the 4%  would be useful in the name of transparency. – Peter Daw

It’s demoralising and shaming to have to live like a beggar, while at the same time being expected to show up to job interviews looking confident – if there’s an interview even on offer.

I’ve only needed Centrelink payments twice, but it was much easier to get a job back then. I got the same money in 2007 as I was getting as a student ten years earlier! And it still hasn’t gone up in any meaningful way. This is inhumane.

Now there are few jobs, training for local kids all but abandoned and migrants brought in to fill what jobs remain – yet the approach to the unemployed is punitive. It’s ridiculous. This is the one group by necessity who spend their entire incomes back into the economy.

Give them enough to spend to live a meaningful life, boost the economy by doing so, and put jobs back in Australian hands instead of pandering to big business to allow cheap labor into the country. – Angie Walker
