The second season of the podcast series 20:MinuteCity asks South Australia’s young leaders how they’ve achieved success, and stayed sane in the process.
Eloise Hall wants the world to be an equal place.
This is what the 23-year-old thinks about when she’s running the day-to-day operations of her ground-breaking menstrual health social enterprise, Taboo.
“I really want the world to embrace social enterprise, and I think it’s the way I see the planet becoming an equal place,” Hall says in an episode of the podcast 20:MinuteCity.
“It’s the way we can redistribute our wealth, it’s a way we can do that sustainably, and it’s not an anti-capitalist sentiment, but just redesigning our consumer behaviour to play the equal game.
“It really just pulls apart at the moment that wealth attracts wealth, and we can really redesign how our spending habits can create change, and literally with a flip of a switch.
“We just literally have to start communicating the practicality of social enterprise, and I’m so excited for that to happen. It’s going to save the planet.”
Hall, who founded the company alongside Isobel Marshall five years ago, is one of the eight featured guests on this season of 20:MinuteCity.
The podcast was launched by Future Forum and CityMag two years ago as a way to discuss Adelaide’s future with people who shape the city’s culture.
Architect and Das Studio co-director Dino Vrynios was originally hosting Future Forum events that brought people together to discuss big issues such as the future of education, but the pandemic saw him pivot into podcasts.
In the second season, Vrynios says he wanted to focus on telling the stories of the recipients of InDaily’s 40 Under 40 awards.
“I was a recipient of the 40 Under 40 and through that program have come to realise just how impressive that cohort is and the amazing stuff that’s happening in South Australia,” Vrynios says.
“I was always so pleasantly surprised, inspired and energised by other people’s stories. For me personally, I take a lot from listening to other people’s tales, their own journeys and experiences to try find alignment in my own.
“Eloise, in particular, for someone at 23 to be that switched on is remarkable, and I genuinely get excited by people from other sectors who are doing these amazing things.”
Other guests this season include managing director of Community Corporate Carmen Garcia, Chefs on Wheels founder Paul Baker, sports technology expert Ben Tripodi and general manager of Channel 44 Lauren Hillman.
“I wanted to be able to create a platform to share those stories so that other people might be inspired to take that little bit of risk and back themselves in,” Vrynios says.
“Everyone has their own journey, in life, and professionally. But, I think if within these little snippets of the stories of these amazing people it can have resonance with the listener at some level, and help them improve who they are, or their output, or whatever it might be, that’s a win.”
While the first season focused on mental health and wellbeing, that thread continues to flow through these eight episodes.
Vrynios says the episodes not only discuss what they’ve been able to achieve in their respective careers but how they’ve managed to stay sane in the process.
“When you are a high performer and a high achiever, you push yourself to the absolute limits and can break, and in 2017/18, I had multiple physical and mental breakdowns,” he says.
“The advice I got from my support network was to talk about it, and I did that, particularly as part of returning to the profession and re-engaging with my peers.
“It became apparent that it was so common. By talking about it at openly within our practice, the Future Forum event platform, as well as doing the podcast, the intention is to show people that if leaders are comfortable talking about it, a positive environment on the matter can be cultivated.
“If it’s okay for them, then, you know, maybe it’s okay for me to talk about it. And if it’s had a positive impact on just one person, then it’s worth it.”
