Two more COVID deaths but hospital cases drop
Two more people have died in South Australia after testing positive for COVID-19 as the state today recorded 2762 new cases.
Today’s daily caseload is a slight increase from yesterday, but the number of people with COVID-19 in hospital has decreased from 223 to 212, with 10 in intensive care.
The majority of those in hospital – 118 – have received three or more vaccine doses, while 85 patients are either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.
In a statement this afternoon, SA Health said two women aged in their 80s and 90s had died after testing COVID-positive.
It said the BA.2 Omicron subvariant is still the most common variant in South Australia, with the strain identified in 80.7 per cent of genome samples collected between June 1 and 13.

Earlier this week, chief public health officer Professor Nicola Spurrier warned daily COVID cases were forecast to double under a new peak expected to hit South Australia in mid-July.
She said modelling by the University of Adelaide showed daily cases peaking at around 4-5000 by July 12, spurred by the new BA.5 Omicron subvariant.
Testing has picked up slightly in South Australia, with 8763 people receiving a PCR test yesterday – a 7.2 per cent increase on the previous 24 hours.
Of the test results returned yesterday, 1493 PCR tests were positive, while 1269 positive rapid antigen test results were reported.
