Williams, a five-time Wimbledon singles winner and all-time record holder for most Grand Slams played, was announced on Tuesday as joining the field for the Brisbane International, along with Ash Barty, from January 6 to 12.

The Adelaide International will be held at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre immediately following, from January 12 to 18.

Williams, 39, won five Wimbledon singles titles, reached 16 Grand Slam finals and won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles alongside her sister, Serena.

InDaily asked Tourism Minister David Ridgway’s office this morning if it could confirm Williams would play at the Adelaide International.

A spokesperson asked if InDaily had checked with Tennis SA. InDaily left a message with Tennis SA but received no response.

InDaily again asked Ridgway’s office if it could confirm Williams would appear.

A government spokesperson later sent a statement, saying: “At this stage we have no further news but we hope to make further player announcements soon.”
