Italian wine merchant La Cantina presents an in-depth exploration of Sangiovese, the wine that challenges, delights and intrigues winemakers. Through this comparative tasting, participants will discover what makes this wine variety so special and how it responds to different regions throughout Tuscany and Australia. Experience the many flavours and food secrets of SA’s unique food manufacturing destination at Glynde during the inaugural Taste Glynde event, which is being hosted by the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters as part of Tasting Australia. A free community event, Taste Glynde is an opportunity to discover local food producers and enjoy product samples, food and wine, and cooking demonstrations by renowned chefs including the new Food Secrets of Glynde ambassador, Salvatore Pepe. ‘No Meat May’ is an initiative that challenges Australians to eliminate meat from their diets for 31 days. It aims to address four key issues related to the over-consumption of meat (environment, personal health, animal welfare and food equity), and challenge meat eaters to make more sustainable and animal-friendly food choices. Those who sign up for No Meat May can choose to donate or raise funds through sponsorship for its four aligned not-for-profit organisations: Greenpeace, Animals Australia, Cancer Council Australia and Oxfam Australia. Inspired by television’s The Great British Bake Off, this new Adelaide Hills baking competition with 22 entry categories will be judged on Saturday, April 30. On Sunday, May 1, the winning entries will be on display at the Mylor Hall, where there will also be garden stalls, old recipe books, cooking utensils and cakes available for purchase. City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Stephen Patterson says this weekend’s forecast risk of inclement weather has prompted event organisers to move Glenelg’s seafood beach feast, ‘Salt: A Bayou Experience at the Bay’ to a new date in Spring. The lunch event has been rescheduled to Sunday, October 30 to kick off the Holdfast Bay event season. Council will contact all ticket holders directly. Another highlight of the 2016 Tasting Australia program is Dougal McFuzzlebutt (McFuzzlebutt’s Manchen) and Ray Dahdah’s (Out in The Paddock) “Floating Feast”. The five-course dinner along the River Torrens on the Popeye will bring together premium South Australian food producers, including Sam Worrall-Thompson from Kitchen & Catering by Sam, Ivan Tomic from The Roaming Spit and Daniela Mazzone of Chocolat by Daniela. The menu will feature Saltbush Lamb from Richard Gunner and Schu-Am Pork complemented by Torbrek Wines and craft beer from Vale Brewing. The event will start at Adelaide Rowing Club at 5pm for canapés and beverages, before guests board the Popeye for entrée, main and dessert, then return to the Rowing Club at 9.10pm for petit fours and a final beverage. Step back in time at Leonard’s Mill Restaurant for Stone Ground, a three-course candlelit buffet dinner of 1880s fare celebrating the 2016 History Festival. The annual Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend offers a variety of events highlighting the region’s food, wine and hospitality. Mitchell Wines of Sevenhill and Terroir restaurant of Auburn are teaming up to host a breakfast picnic at the winery on Sunday, May 15, featuring grilled Moroccan-style merguez sausages with broccolini, mushrooms, baked beans and corn bread; haloumi with minted pea yoghurt and fattoush salad; crab and potato cakes with sourdough, smoked almond slaw and citrus creme fraiche; and two Riesling cocktails created with the help of Lotus Lounge. Mushrooms are the ingredient of choice for the seasonal South-West City community cooking competition at the Duke of Brunswick Hotel. Losing the Plot: food gardening in South Australia is a Migration Museum exhibition that is also featured on the Tasting Australia program. Losing the Plot explores the history of growing food in South Australia and examines the stories behind the food on our plates, from Aboriginal food production and school and community gardens to the home garden and market gardens in SA. The exhibition is accompanied by a program of workshops and talks focussing on food gardening and the use of garden produce in preserving and cooking.
