Serge goes home after short-lived Reds comeback
Former Adelaide United striker Sergio van Dijk, who recently returned to the club for its short-lived Asian Champions League bid, is back in his native Holland and training with his former club Emmen.
The Dutch-born van Dijk, who took up Indonesian citizenship to play for the country of his grandparents’ birth in 2013, is on the search for a new club, but Emmen FC’s website has revealed he is back training at his former home, where he played between 2005 and 2008, including alongside his brother Danny in the 2007-08 season.

Van Dijk, now 33, left Adelaide United in 2013 after winning over fans with 50 goals in 105 A-League games for the Reds and Brisbane Roar.

His 17 goals in the 2010/11 season won him the competition’s Golden Boot, but he was released by the club three years ago, after falling out with then-coach John Kosmina.
He has since played club football in Thailand, Iran and Indonesia, and is now a free agent.
He made a brief return to United – as an international import – to help fire its ill-fated Asian Champions League campaign, but played less than a half, coming on as a second-half substitute in Adelaide’s losing play-off against Shandong Luneng last month.
