Popular three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux will undergo surgery in the hope of having a happy retirement.
English trainer Ed Dunlop feared Red Cadeaux would have to be put down after he suffered a leg fracture.
“It’s a bad injury, but it should be repairable,” he said.
Dunlop said he and Red Cadeaux’s connections would do everything in their power to ensure the 10-year-old makes a full recovery.
“If the guys do their job, he’ll have a very happy retirement.”
Vets at the University of Melbourne Equine Centre in Werribee have contacted other world-leading equine orthopaedic surgeons as they work out the best option to repair the fracture in Red Cadeaux’s left-fore fetlock.
University of Melbourne vet Dr Chris Whitton said the injury was not currently life threatening and the horse was comfortable.
A further update on his condition is expected this afternoon.
