Former Hahndorf and Sturt player Dean Gore will return to South Australia as part of the trade deal between Adelaide and Geelong over superstar midfielder Patrick Dangerfield.

The Crows confirmed a short time ago that Gore is part of a done deal, including draft picks 9 and 28, to deliver Dangerfield to the Cats.

Gore, who was drafted by the Cats last year, didn’t crack a game in the AFL during his first season with Geelong but is considered a fine prospect and showed impressive VFL form.

The medium-sized defender/utility played 12 games for Sturt in the SANFL before being drafted by Geelong with pick number 55 at the November 2014 national draft.

The Crows said Adelaide will receive Geelong’s first round (currently No.9) and second round (currently No.28) selections in November’s national draft, as well as Gore, in exchange for Dangerfield and a third round selection (currently No.50).

Crows head of football David Noble told the club’s website the trade provided a greater level of compensation than what was available under the AFL’s free agency rules.

“All along we were intent on doing what was in the best interests of our club, and we have been able to deliver the best possible outcome,” Noble said.

“Securing picks 9 and 28 allows us to add some more quality talent to our playing list, while Dean is a young man who has the makings of a long-term player.

“I would also like to acknowledge Geelong for the professional manner in which these negotiations where handled.”

Noble said the club viewed Gore as a good prospect.

“Our recruiting team rated Dean highly in the lead up to last year’s draft and he was on the verge of playing AFL football in his debut year,” Noble said.

He said the Crows were “well placed” for the remainder of the trade period given the deal had been completed on day one.

As it stands this morning, Adelaide holds selections 9, 13, 28, 32 and 68 in the national draft.

The trade period got underway in Melbourne this morning, with Dangerfield’s move to the Cats a major piece of the trade period puzzle.

Representatives from all 18 clubs are scheduled to meet on the first day of the 11-day trading period, with several clubs expressing a desire to get some trades done early in the piece.

Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine confirmed that securing want-away GWS midfielder Adam Treloar is the Magpies’ main focus.

“Our priority is to get Adam done and we’ll look at other potential (trades) post that,” Hine said.

“We’ve had some preliminary discussions with GWS.”

Brisbane midfielder James Aish has also requested a trade to Collingwood but the Lions remain steadfast in their position that they won’t be trading the former top-10 pick.

The Pies are set for a busy few days with Paul Seedsman, Ben Kennedy and Nathan Freeman all requesting trades.

Seedsman is yet to declare his destination of choice, but Kennedy wants to join Melbourne and Freeman wants to play for St Kilda.

“We’re not going to be silly about it but clearly Nathan’s a first-round draft pick,” Hine said of negotiations for Freeman.

“We’ve had some preliminary discussions with St Kilda and we’re really comfortable with where that’s going.

“I’d like to get that done sooner rather than later but nothing surprises me during this.”

It seems likely Melbourne utility Jeremy Howe will be on the move, with Gold Coast and North Melbourne among his keenest suitors.

Carlton have shown interest in several GWS players, including Adam Tomlinson.

But the Blues will also be busy organising trades for highly rated duo Chris Yarran and Lachie Henderson, who have made it clear they want to join Richmond and Geelong respectively.

The Giants are set to play hardball with key position player Cam McCarthy, who is being chased hard by Fremantle.

McCarthy wants to return to his home state of WA despite signing a contract extension with the Giants earlier this year.
