Immigration and border force workers have walked off the job, with thousands of international travellers facing delays at airports across the country.
For the next 10 days, staff will stop work for two hours during the morning and evening peaks at eight Australian airports, to express their frustration over take home pay cuts.
National Secretary of Community and Public Sector Union Nadine Flood said the cuts will leave some workers $8000 or more a year, worse off.
“These are mums and dads worried about paying their mortgage and paying their bills,” Ms Flood told the Nine Network.
“These workers face a big cut to pay and big cut to their rights.”
Australian Border Force said arrangements are in place to minimise impact on operations.
“If you are going overseas, we advise you to arrive at the airport early.”
The strikes started at 4am in Cairns and are scheduled for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and the Gold Coast and again in the evening.
