Crows can avenge Port, says Fagan

A victory over Hawthorn at the MCG tonight would “right some wrongs” not just for the Crows, but for Port Adelaide as well, Adelaide’s chief executive believes.

Despite accounting for the Hawks in their first ever final back in 1993, the Adelaide Football Club has had a fraught recent record against Hawthorn in recent major round match-ups, being bundled out by less than a kick in 2007 and 2012.

But Andrew Fagan says South Australia also owes Alastair Clarkson’s team for denying Port Adelaide a Grand Final berth last September, with the Hawks hanging on by three points against a fast finishing Power.

“Hopefully we can try to right some wrongs for South Australia,” Fagan told a Property Council lunch yesterday.

“Because Hawthorn knocked the Crows out and they also knocked Port out (so) it would be nice to send them back.”

Adelaide is playing the reigning premier for a chance to face Fremantle in a preliminary final, after a remarkable display of team resilience in the wake of the 3 July death of club coach Phil Walsh.

Fagan said the Crows “wouldn’t have forgiven themselves” if they’d let their season slip in the wake of the shock slaying.

Instead, he said, the horrific event “galvanized” the group of young men, who were determined not to “piss Walshy off” by making his death an excuse for an underachieving season.

“The group was already tight, really tight… but that event was galvanizing,” Fagan said.

“They spoke not long after, in the days that followed and the weeks that followed, about not letting up…not letting that event become an excuse for the season.

“Because, to be frank, that would have really pissed Walshy off.”
