Carlisle has told the Bombers he wants out.

St Kilda has confirmed Essendon big man Jake Carlisle is the club’s top target in the upcoming AFL trade period.

St Kilda football manager Jamie Cox said Carlisle’s ability to play key position roles at either end of the ground made him an attractive prospect.

“Our backline particularly is probably on the wrong side of 30,” Cox told SEN radio today.

“They played some fantastic football this year and Sam Fisher and Sean Dempster have re-committed for next year. But certainly a player of his size and capabilities fits the bill.”

Carlisle, 23, requested a trade from the Bombers after six seasons with the club.

Carlton has also been linked with the 198cm, 98kg key position player. If the Bombers can’t organise a trade for Carlisle, he will be free to move in the pre-season draft.

But Cox wasn’t showing the Saints’ full trade period hand as he remained tight-lipped over whether the club is chasing troubled Gold Coast star Harley Bennell.

“Harley’s obviously a terrific player,” Cox said.

“He’s a very talented player and has a lot to offer I’m sure.”

Bennell’s career with the Suns came to an end after a series of off-field indiscretions prompted the club to seek a trade for him.

The trade period begins on October 12.
