Julia Gillard to deliver Inaugural AFFLIP Oration
The Australian Foundation for Fostering Learning in the Philippines (AFFLIP) is a voluntary, non-government, not for profit Foundation based in South Australia, which seeks to make a contribution to the educational development of young people living in some of the poorest areas of the Philippines.
At present AFFLIP’s work is located in Mindanao in the southern Philippines. It is currently supporting fifteen very poorly resourced elementary public schools in the Talomo District of Davao City.
Participation in fundraising events such as the Inaugural AFFLIP Oration allows the organisation to finance flagship programs including Professional Development: Literacy, Schools Networking, Health and Nutrition, Scholarship Programs, Curriculum Resources and Learning through the Outdoor Environment.
The Health and Nutrition program has assisted each of the fifteen schools to establish and maintain vegetable gardens and ponds for aquaculture projects. The produce of these are used in the schools’ feeding programs for malnourished students.
In addition, AFFLIP is working with the teachers to develop approaches to using the vegetable gardens and aquaculture ponds as resources for teaching a range of subjects, including literacy and numeracy. This involves devising appropriate teaching resources and professional development programs.

The Hon Julia Gillard, former Prime Minister of Australia will be delivering the Inaugural Australian Foundation for Fostering Learning in the Philippines Oration in August. She will discuss her work as Chair of the Global Partnership for Education, and the efforts underway around the world to forge consensus on the Sustainable Development Goals for education, to be adopted at the UN in New York in December. Ms Gillard will discuss the issues, the opportunities and the challenges involved – and what they mean for education of children in the world’s poorest and most conflict-plagued countries.
