Adelaide will host this year’s NAB AFL Draft – the first time the key event in the AFL calendar has been held in South Australia since 1997.
The event, to be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 5.30pm on 24 November, has been snaffled from the Gold Coast, where it has been held for the past three years.
It will be just the sixth time the draft has been held outside Victoria since it began in 1986.
The last time Adelaide hosted the event, young players selected included the likes of Chad Cornes, Adam Goodes and Matthew Scarlett.
AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan thanked the South Australian Government “for their continued support of the AFL and for their commitment to stage the 2015 draft”.
“The AFL industry looks forward to descending on the great city of Adelaide in November when we welcome the next wave of talented footballers into the 18 clubs,” he said in a statement.
SA tourism minister Leon Bignell said about 350 AFL officials, executives, coaches, draftees and media would be in Adelaide for the event.
“I hope to see a couple of thousand attend the draft to see how their club performs and who the future stars of the sport will be,” he said.
Entry to the event will be free.
