Gibbs cops ban for Gray sling tackle

Carlton has accepted a two match ban for midfielder Bryce Gibbs, after a controversial spear tackle on Port Adelaide star Robbie Gray.

The former number one draft pick will miss the Blues’ upcoming AFL matches against Gold Coast and the Western Bulldogs after accepting an early guilty plea to his rough conduct charge, despite Carlton reportedly considering a risky appeal.

Gibbs risked a three-match sanction had he unsuccessfully challenged the charge at the AFL tribunal.

Gray was stretchered from the field after his head collided with the MCG turf on Saturday afternoon, after Gibbs pinned his arms and drove him the the deck.

The incident lit up social media, with retired Port captain Dom Cassisi tweeting ironically: “It’s only taken 8 years for Gibbs to lay a tackle. Well done.” He later sent an apology to the Carlton player.

At the time of the incident, Gray had 15 possessions and two goals to his name, and threatened to drag his team over the line as Carlton hung to a tenuous lead. The Blues ended up stealing a four-point victory.

The tribunal is not required to sit tonight after all players charged by the match review panel in round 12 took early guilty pleas.
