International Support of Victims Torture Day recognition event

Jun 18, 2015, updated May 13, 2025

The Survivors of Torture and Trauma Assistance and Rehabilitation Service (STTARS) provides a vital service in South Australia. STTARS assists people from a refugee and migrant background who have experienced torture or been traumatised as a result of persecution, violence, war or unlawful imprisonment prior to arrival in Australia.

As a trauma focused agency, STTARS offers group counselling, one-to-one rehabilitation provision, survivor centred advocacy and support. STTARS provides education and training to schools, GPs, allied health providers, police, volunteers and other organisations who work within a similar sector or are interested in our model of practice.

In recognition of the annual United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture  on 26 June, STTARS is co-presenting the public lecture titled ‘Rehabilitation: co-creating new lives’ with The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre. With key note presentation by Mr Thomas Albrecht, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Regional Representative, this event will offer unique insight into the world of refugees prior to arrival in Australia, with emphasis on rehabilitation for the survivor as an international standpoint.

Mr Albrecht will share a review on the situation of refugees; human beings known to all of us for their courage, resilience and hope against all odds, and discuss the challenges of ensuring their protection.

The event will start with music from Sufi Soul Qawwali at 6.00pm with the lecture starting at 6.30pm.
