With storms raging across other states in the past few weeks as well as our own damaging windstorm, South Australians need to prepare now for wild weather.
RAA Insurance Claims Manager Hayley Cain, says over 35 per cent of all home and content claims during June/July are storm related and many could be avoided with basic home maintenance and simple preparation.
“As we’ve seen recently, there is no controlling the force of nature, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take action now to minimise the risk.
Steps to storm-proof your property

- Inspect and fix fences, roofs and gutters and remove loose materials
- Clean gutters and downpipes frequently and make sure drains are clear of leaves and dirt
- Seal any cracks in building foundations and exterior walls
- Keep branches near your home and powerlines trimmed – remove any that are unstable (with council approval)
- Learn how and when to turn off the utility mains such as gas, electricity and water
- Tidy away any loose objects that could blow around in your yard and driveway
- Park your car undercover and away from trees
- Make a plan for the safety of your animals in extreme weather
- Make sure your home and content insurance is adequate and up to date
- Keep an emergency kit and list of emergency numbers near the telephone (for a flood or storm emergency call the SES on 132 500)
“When winds are gusting and the rain is driving in, it’s really too late to try and secure roof tiles or clear gutters. Your priority in that situation has to be the safety of yourself and your family.
“Don’t wait for a strong storm front to hit – get serious about storm proofing your home now,” says Ms Cain.
