The Sacred Heart College football factory — whose industrious production line has previously churned out elite AFL products such as Matthew Pavlich, Andrew Mackie and the Cornes brothers — has notched up another success, with Cory Gregson winning the AFL’s Rising Star nomination for Round 6.

Already proving great value for Geelong in his debut AFL season, the South Australian small forward kicked three goals and helped set up two others in Friday night’s big win over Collingwood.

The Cats recruited the 18-year-old with the 47th pick in last year’s national draft.

“Cory came in and put in a very good pre-season and earned his spot in our team from round one,” said coach Chris Scott.

“He has so far answered every challenge that has been in front of him and he is making a very good contribution.

“Cory has a great work ethic and willingness to work at his game and that will allow him to continue to grow and evolve as a player.”

The early season hype contrasts from Gregson’s previous brush with media attention, when in August 2013 Sacred Heart reportedly refused his SANFL debut with Glenelg, as he was required to play in an inter-school game against Rostrevor.
