The State Government’s revamped trade support scheme appears to have attracted interest with 45 applications in the first grant round of the new scheme.

Now known as the Export Partnership Program, the scheme offers up to $50,000 for eligible export projects and activities, with recipients matching the Government funding.

The Minister for Trade and Investment, Martin Hamilton-Smith, said the response indicated “a healthy appetite from South Australian businesses to explore global markets”.

The revamp of the former Gateway Business program will ensure that funding goes to the most active and prepared exporters by allowing a successful grant recipient to access further financial support as they pursue more export opportunities.

“Companies can apply multiple times until they reach the full $50,000 allocation, and based on the recent response it will be a very competitive process,” Hamilton-Smith told Business Insight.

“Grants may be used to support coaching, training, market intelligence and mentoring in order to plan for international opportunities and build their export capability,” he said.

“A number of sectors stand to benefit from the new grant including aerospace, creative industries, food and wine and services.”

Elsewhere on the trade front, Hamilton-Smith will meet his Federal and State counterparts tomorrow in Tasmania for discussions on latest developments in the free trade agreements with China, Korea and Japan.

Later this month he will accompany Premier Weatherill and Ministers Gago and Bignell with the largest delegation of South Australian business and government representatives to visit China.
