Marcello Costa receives Bragg membership from RiAus

Marcello Costa, Professor of Neurophysiology in the School of Medicine, has been made an Honorary Bragg Member of RiAus.

Professor Costa was one of 14 leading Australian scientists to receive the recognition, which is the highest category of membership conferred by RiAus.

The awards were made by the organisation’s patron , Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, during a lunch and ceremony at the Science Exchange in central Adelaide.

In addition to his distinguished career in neurophysiology at Flinders, Professor Costa was cited for hs active role in the field of philosophy of science and education in neuroscience. He remains actively involved in several areas within neuroscience research, as well as being engaged in public education.

“Our success in science and engineering is integral to a prosperous future for our nation and it is important to highlight and celebrate great achievements in this area,” said RiAus Chairman Mr Peter Yates.

Former Flinders Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb, now Australia’s Chief Scientist, was among the recipients, who also included South Australian medical pioneer Dr Basil Hetzel and astronaut Dr Andy Thomas.

The other recipients were: Professor John Shine, Professor Michelle Simmons, Professor Carola Vinuesa, Dr John O’Sullivan, Dr Alan Finkel,  Professor Lyn Beazley, Emeritus Professor Ian Lowe, Professor Caroline McMillen, Emerita Professor Patricia Vickers-Rich and Emeritus Professor Christopher Burrell.

The Honorary Bragg Membership was named after pioneering South Australian scientists Sir William Henry Bragg and Sir William Lawrence Bragg.
