James Aish’s manager is surprised that Brisbane are pessimistic about retaining the young AFL star.

Liam Pickering insists Aish is yet to decide whether he wants to stay with the Lions beyond this season.

He was responding to comments from Brisbane chief executive Greg Swann on the weekend.

Swann said they are not overly confident that South Australian Aish, taken with pick No.7 in the 2013 national draft, will re-sign.

“I heard his comments – I was surprised he said that,” Pickering told SEN.

“I had a meeting with him not all that long ago and I told him James hadn’t told me he doesn’t want to be at Brisbane.”

Aish first made a name for himself with SANFL team Norwood, where he has strong family connections, and there is speculation he will return to Adelaide.

But Pickering is also fielding calls from several non-Adelaide clubs about the midfielder.

Aish comes out of contract at the end of this year and talks with the Lions about a new deal have stalled.

“I actually don’t know whether he wants to continue at Brisbane,” Pickering said.

“We’ve had a lot of discussions and there’s obviously a lot of interest in James.

“But until he tells me he doesn’t want to be there, he’s a Brisbane player.”
