SA jobless rate falls

In good news for local job-seekers, South Australia has experienced the biggest fall in unemployment and the largest increase in the participation rate in the country.

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today show SA experienced the biggest decrease in the jobless rate in March – dropping from 6.8 per cent in February (seasonally adjusted) to 6.4 per cent.

The state also had the biggest increase in participation – up 0.3 percentage points.

SA now has a lower unemployment rate than Tasmania and Queensland (both on 6.6 per cent), but has a higher rate than Victoria (6.2), NSW (6.0), and Western Australia (5.5).

Overall, Australia’s unemployment rate fell to 6.1 per cent as the economy added a surprisingly strong number of jobs.

The total number of people with jobs rose 37,700 to 11.72 million in March, more than double the amount economists expected, the ABS said on Thursday.

Most of the gains were in full-time work, which rose 31,500 taking unemployment back to levels not seen since December 2014.
