QantasLink’s new daily flight service to Whyalla will bring the added benefit of boosting regional tourism, says Damien Kitto, chief executive of the Adelaide Convention Bureau.
Kitto said that “convenience and accessibility” were vital drivers of regional tourism and the new QantasLink flights would only enhance Whyalla’s attractiveness, not only for conference visitors but also for leisure travellers.
“While most of the larger conventions rely on infrastructure in Adelaide, the regions benefit in the pre- and post-event touring opportunities that are also available,” Kitto said.
He said the Convention Bureau was also encouraging site visits to regional centres that might align with a conference theme, citing the example of a large group of delegates attending a World Aquaculture Conference last year that also visited Port Lincoln.
QantasLink’s new service to Whyalla will start on Monday and provide 1300 seats a week between Adelaide and Whyalla.
Announcing the new service late last year, QantasLink Chief Executive Officer John Gissing said the new route will expand business and tourism opportunities for the Whyalla community.
“We have great confidence in the Whyalla market and we’re really looking forward to starting this service,” Gissing said.
Whyalla City Council Mayor Jim Pollock said the new service will create more opportunities for people to visit, experience and do business in Whyalla.
“Council’s $3 million airport upgrade is a testament to our commitment to making Whyalla a great place to live, work and invest,” Pollock said.
“Council welcomes and looks forward to QantasLink’s new service which will help increase and promote business and tourism opportunities in the city and region,” he said.
