Sue Michael: Mid Northern

Apr 01, 2015, updated May 13, 2025

Artist Sue Michael presents a series of landscape paintings depicting the blinding dust storms, the heat, cold winds and drought as shaping forces of South Australia’s Mid North. Although arid gardens can be seen there is an uplifting mood in the works, where sites of activity, mythopeotic elements and animal life is seen, rather than people.

When viewing the art it is evident that she incorporates place-making to her painting practice. The art depicts gentle perseverance in a human community. The artwork portrays the everyday world of taken-for-grantedness to which typically we pay no attention.

Sue is currently the resident creative with the Mid North Knowledge Partnership under the supervision of Prof Dean Carson and Heidi Hodge and is a PhD student in Visual Art, at the University of South Australia.

This event is presented by The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre.
